Being a Connecticut family photographer, my days are often filled with the heartwarming moments of capturing the love that exists within a family. That love looks different from family to family. But it is shared by all parents, no matter what stage of life their child is currently experiencing. One thing is for certain: the wistfulness a parent has when laying eyes on their child is ever-present. It's a look that only a parent would understand. It is closely followed by ubiquitous adoration at every turning point. From the time a parent celebrates the impending arrival of their child to their first birthday. From the adventurous toddler years spent chasing their little ones around the house to the imaginative moments of childhood. That same love and adoration endure as they watch their child take on the world as a young adult.

While it’s true that many times, as a Connecticut family photographer, the family sessions I capture have an overwhelming focus on Mom, I believe it is equally important for Dad to step in front of the camera. A father’s love is equally deep and exceedingly unconditional. A loving father shows up in those moments that structure their child's upbringing. A loving father shows their child what it means to sacrifice for their family with love, kindness, and a joyful heart.
I know, without a doubt, that kind of love is worthy of being captured. There is a common misconception about family photography. The misconception is that family photography only occurs at the holidays, a family reunion, or a big vacation. But what about those quiet moments of everyday life that are just as noteworthy? The beginning or end of the school year, the moments spent in quiet relaxation, or the nights you gather around the table for dinner to pour over the details of your day and find refuge in your family. If you ask me, those are some of the best reasons to schedule a photoshoot. Showing your children that they are loved, worthy, and ready to do big things in the world (with you by their side) is such a beautiful reason to take meaningful photos together.

When preparing to work with a Connecticut family photographer for a session such as this, so many of my clients ask me what they should wear. I am highly involved in helping them select their attire for the session, but in a flexible way that provides them with full creative control. One of my top tips for family photography is to select attire using a complimentary color palette. For this father & son duo, they chose to wear tones of muted blues. The colors were the perfect selection to give their photos a warm, comforting appearance. They kept their looks crisp but casual and matched their sports coats with jeans and hand-stitched leather loafers. This approach to their attire added a soft but overall empowering feeling to their photoshoot. Towards the end of the session, we changed their look to t-shirts and jeans for a fun take on their father-and-son photoshoot. I’ve included some of my favorite moments from this session in the photos below; you can scroll to see more details.
