As a Greenwich CT family photographer, it was such a joy to capture this mommy-and-me session. In fact, it was an extra special day in the studio. Not only did this beautiful mom spend some time with her adoring little girl in front of the camera, but it was also a first birthday celebration! I truly love that the parents I work with take the time to relish their little ones while they are still small. A photoshoot is always a time filled with snuggles, fun, laughter, and most importantly, strengthening the bond between mother and child.

But if we have the opportunity to turn a photoshoot into a fun celebration, that’s where the magic happens. There is a saying about parenthood; “the days are long but the years are short”. It means that when we are in the midst of it, refilling sippy cups, toting around a diaper bag, and teaching our children how to navigate the world, the days can feel long and dutiful. Of course, it is a fulfilling duty, but if we blink - we’ll feel as if we’ve missed it all. Despite that, finding a way to celebrate each milestone, with the photos to recall the memories for a lifetime, allows us to slow time and soak up those snuggles for an extra minute, or have fun in the mundane moments of day-to-day life.

When families ask about working with me as their Greenwich CT family photographer, I enjoy the flexibility of turning a mommy & me shoot into a first birthday celebration. Oftentimes, a milestone photoshoot (whether it’s a sitter session or a first birthday cake smash session) is the first time your baby will be fully aware of the camera. Naturally, many children have reservations about the camera being directed at them. Most children become shy and need the time and care it takes to allow them the space to feel comfortable enough for a beautiful smile. Nonetheless, if mommy is right there beside them, cuddling them safely and enjoying the moment as well, they will let their curiosity soar and we can create something truly magical.

For the session featured below, I began with the mommy and me photos for that exact reason. It allowed the birthday girl plenty of time to warm up to being in the studio while getting used to the idea of the camera.
For attire, Mom chose to work with a palette of white tones and a selection of soft muted pastels. The birthday girl arrived in a creamy peach dress with ruffle sleeves and rosettes adorning the bodice. From there, her Mom dressed her in a lovely white dress with sheer sleeves as we prepared to bring out her birthday cake. She was very curious about her birthday cake and took her time exploring each component. First the candle, then the sprinkles, and finally the cake. Lastly, she reached into her cake to grab a small handful for a taste. I captured every beautiful second of our in-studio celebration of her first trip around the sun and you can see it all through the photos below.
